The
Cumberland Homesteads
Tower and Museum
Located on Hwy127 South in the Homesteads Community, the
Tower stands tall like a beacon. The community was created as part of the
New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help ease the financial
strain caused by the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Tower sits in the
fork of Hwy 127 South to the right and Hwy 68 to the left. A drive through
this community will reveal beautiful pasture land and Homestead homes
built from the local stone quarried in Crab Orchard. A visit to the tower
will enlighten you to this era and the view from the top of the tower
reveals the beauty of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau.
Pioneer Hall
Museum
The Pleasant Hill Community is very important to Cumberland County's
history due to Doctor May Wharton who founded the first hospital in our
area. It was eventually closed and relocated as CMC our Cumberland Medical
Center, named as one of the 100 hospitals in America. Pioneer Hall houses
other important early history of Cumberland County with memorabilia from
the Pleasant Hill Academy. Open from spring until fall each year from 10
AM to 4 PM on Wednesdays and from 2 to 5 PM on Sundays. Other hours are
available by appointment. Admission is free. For information call
277-3872 or 277-3051.
Crabtree House Museum
Crabtree House, located in the
historic Homesteads on Pigeon Ridge Road, was recently added to the
historical landmarks of the Homesteads and is open daily 10 AM to 5 PM and
Sunday 12 PM to 5 PM. It was built in the early- to mid-1030s and once
sat on 35 acres of farmland. For more information, call 484-8529.
