The Palace was used during World War 2 to promote the sale of War Bonds and
hold scrap metal drives. The Palace also played host to live entertainment as
well, featuring such artist as Kitty Wells, Roy Acuff and the Smoky Mountain
Boys, and Bob Steele, a cowboy moviestar.
The Palace closed in May of 1978 and the building began to deteriorate.
The efforts of a local group trying to find funds to renovate it led to
the Palace being listed in David Naylors book "Great American Movie Theatres"
