| Recreation . . .
One of the major reasons for Cumberland County's
recent surge of popularity is the vast amount of recreational
opportunities to be enjoyed within its 679 square miles of peaceful hills
and valleys, crystal-clear waters, majestic forests, and lofty mountains.
For your comfort and pleasure, many parks, camps, and resorts are located
throughout the area.
Sports enthusiasts find the county a favorite place to hunt, much as their
nomadic forebears found it long ago. Deer, boar, upland game birds, and
many kinds of other small game make this a hunter's paradise. A special
favorite is Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, a 79,740-acre preserve which
assures a yearly surplus of each species to be harvested. Among other
popular hunting spots is Caryonah Hunting Lodge and Preserve, the state's
oldest preserve, long noted for its abundant wild boar as well as rams,
goats, deer, and turkeys.
Fishing is pure delight because of the area's many lovely
and healthy streams and lakes. Rewarding catches of largemouth bass,
bluegill, and catfish keep happy fishermen coming back for more. According
to the Rand McNally survey, there are roughly 1,000 man-made lakes in the
region.
The varied wildlife in this scenic region also
beckons to campers, naturalists, botanists, and photographers alike. The
Catoosa Wildlife Management Area has 70 documented species of birds, and
the music of songbirds can be heard throughout the county, among a myriad
of plants and flowers.
Besides hunting, camping, fishing and all the other water sports to be
enjoyed, Cumberland County is famous for golf, Golf, and MORE GOLF! Click
